ARTIST STATEMENT
Aiming to embody and unite my research and process into 3D resolutions, I use my material as a participant in the process, to be guided not only by developed ideas and findings but also importantly, by the wood itself.
Growing up in Aotearoa New Zealand, I was always inspired by the surrounding coastal landscape. After many years working in the marketing and events industry in London, I felt an overwhelming desire to live again, close to the sea. On reflection, this is where I feel the most grounded and connected to my homeland.
Subsequently, inspiration for my sculptural work has been centred around my dual experience of and the importance of connection to place, landmarks from my childhood, objects holding memory, and the landscapes that surround me now - where much of my material is sourced.
For me, wood holds a primitive familiarity, a warmth. It’s reassuring that every piece I work with already has its own life and narrative; we have an immediate dialogue. I believe we are collaborators.
Using research findings, along with traditional and contemporary tools and processes, I aim to communicate through material, form, texture and finish.
Of primary focus within my making process is hand carving. Using hand tools enables a greater connection to my material, it is a tactile and intuitive process where you engage in a physical conversation with the wood. You need to listen with your body to understand how the tool interacts with the material. When your movements and interactions become instinctive, it becomes a wonderfully meditative process which I find incredibly therapeutic.
BIO
From a young age, I was immersed in drawing and creating. I am fortunate to come from a very creative family with talents spanning drawing and painting, ceramics, landscape architecture, costume design, photography, and music.
While working in London for many years across the design, marketing and events industries, I quietly nurtured my passion for art primarily through sketching, painting and research. Over time, my desire to study the arts grew steadily. While expecting my first child, I enrolled in a mixed media course at Central St Martins in London, igniting a deeper commitment to my creative path. After relocating to Brighton, I continued to expand my knowledge and skills through a wide range of short courses, exploring everything from drawing and painting to metalwork and stone carving.
This broad exploration became a more focused pursuit, leading to five years of formal study, including a degree in 3D Design & Craft, working with ceramics, light and heavy metals, polymers and wood. This led to the establishment of my studio, where I continue to explore and develop my creative practice.
