Coastal studies undertaken on the South Coast of England around lockdown, sparked a fascination with the weathered sea groynes. Once incongruous to the coastal landscape they are now embedded in its story, serving as monuments to time and place.
This work suggests a journey where a duo of large-scale sculptures, placed within coastal locations on either side of the world, disappear into the ocean as if embarking or returning from an epic voyage. They enter the sea on the south coast of England and travel in an undeviating line, through the treacherous waters of Drake Passage, to Aotearoa New Zealand, eventually emerging on a Wellington shore.
This work explores themes of duality, distance, life and longing. The elements embedded in the landscape become a place of contemplation and connection, inviting reflection on their enduring presence in the landscape.
